Grooming New Talents

Apart from supporting the professional development of the industry, the Housing Society also endeavors to develop new talents by providing internship and placement opportunities to students from universities and tertiary institutions in Hong Kong and overseas, Institute of Vocational Education and other vocational training institutions. This aims to better equip the younger generation with industry knowledge for their future development.

  • An MOU was signed with 24 local tertiary institutions, including all the universities and their extramural institutions, for cooperation on academic exchanges.

  • In 1994, the Father Cronin Memorial Award was set up to give out Awards annually to outstanding post-graduates of the part-time Master of Housing Management Programme of the University of Hong Kong. The Housing Society extended the initiative in 2006 and established the Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) Award. Since then, the HKHS Award has given out scholarships and bursaries to over 600 students from local tertiary and vocational training institutions amounting over $3 million.

  • Since 2005, the Housing Society has been carrying out the internship programme every summer to allow students from local and overseas tertiary institutions to acquire working experience in various Housing Society departments. The programme includes training workshops, such as “quality customer services” and “interpersonal skills in workplace”, to enhance the personal development of the interns.

  • HS Academy often provides on-the-job training for students from housing or related disciplines. Since 2009, students from Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering in the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Haking Wong) were placed in the housing estates of the Housing Society for internship in order for them to gain real life working experience. Besides, students from YWCA’s Diploma Course in Clubhouse Operations, Leisure and Tourism also worked as interns in the housing estates of the Housing Society in 2010 and 2011.

  • Internship opportunities were also provided for Form Five students from Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai districts since 2008 under the Yuen Long District Students Internship Programme with the aim to broaden their horizons.

  • To provide on-site learning opportunities for local students, the HS Academy also arranged site visits for students to various housing estates and to see different housing projects.

  • To give local secondary students a general picture about the housing development in Hong Kong in the past 60 years since the formation of the Housing Society, as well as to help them understand the social and economic factors that may lead to the change in housing needs in the society, the Housing Society Liberal Study Teaching Kit for Senior Secondary Schools was compiled in 2011. The Teaching Kit covers three study areas, namely “Housing Needs”, “The Need to Improve Living Environment” and “The Housing Need of the Ageing Population”. It aims to broaden the knowledge of students on housing issues and stimulate their thinking through the introduction of the housing development in Hong Kong, issues for discussion and workshop activities.
