City Revitalisation Projects
Since 2006, the Housing Society has been involved in city revitalisation
projects in various districts. The aim is to improve the environment
and enhance the quality of life of the inhabitants. The Housing Society
has completed projects in the districts of Sham Shui Po, Kwai Tsing,
Tai Po, Tsuen Wan, Sai Kung, Islands, Eastern District and Yuen Long,
injecting vitality into old parts of the districts while maintaining district
characteristics that are unique.
In Tuen Mun, the Housing Society has accepted a Government invitation
to undertake a project for the community which is to build a pedestrian
bridge over the Tuen Mun River. Works however cannot begin since
the tender price, obtained in 2012, was well over the original estimates.
The project had to go back to Government for a review. Meanwhile, by
a re-tendering exercise in September last year, we established that the
quoted price had gone up even further.
Eventually a solution was found by the special effort of the Home Affairs
Department, getting an allocation from the Hong Kong Jockey Club
under a community scheme which requires endorsement from the Chief
Executive’s Office. With the additional funding, we are now pursuing the
project with vigour. Completion of this community project is expected to
be end-2016.
