First HKHS Exhibition Centre to Showcase Housing Development Milestones and Serve as Interactive Learning Platform

The first “Housing Society Exhibition Centre” (the Exhibition Centre) was officially opened today (11 December).  Apart from displaying the information of Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) and some historical exhibits, the Exhibition Centre also provides a special experience for the visitors to appreciate the development of HKHS and the housing development of Hong Kong, through the use of innovations including virtual reality applications, somatosensory technology and other multimedia facilities.

Among the officiating guests of the Opening Ceremony of the Exhibition Centre were HKHS Chairman Walter Chan, HKHS Chief Executive Officer Wong Kit-loong and Honorary Advisor to the Hong Kong Museum of History Cheng Po-hung.  On the occasion, Walter Chan said, “After the year-long celebration, the 70th Anniversary of the Housing Society is now rounded off with the opening of the Exhibition Centre.  Being named the ‘housing laboratory’, HKHS keeps progressing with the times to help address the evolving housing needs of Hong Kong people.  As the Exhibition Centre comes into service, HKHS will collaborate with primary and secondary schools, as well as different community groups, to organise guided tours and provide a platform for visitors to exchange views on various housing issues.  The Exhibition Centre will also serve as a platform for Liberal Studies education on local housing development, so as to enrich the young people’s learning experience and strengthen our ties with the community.”

Covering an area of about 200 square metres, the Exhibition Centre is designed with three zones. Zone 1: Short videos portraying rental estates in different decades are shown to illustrate the evolution of HKHS rental estates and their design characteristics.  There is a Communal Wall displaying hundreds of precious old photos collected from residents of rental estates and various objects capturing the footprints of the old days, such as the historical rent record cards and tenancy agreement, reminiscing fond memories at the old rental estates with the visitors.

Zone 2: With Virtual Reality facilities, visitors can enjoy a first-hand experience of residential units designed for the senior citizens of different socio-economic backgrounds, as well as the elderly-friendly home designs.  Besides, a Housing Ladder in Kinect is available for visitors to browse through multi-angle images of HKHS’s rental and subsidised sale projects.  It is hoped that these interesting and interactive exhibits could inspire insights and dialogues among visitors on issues related to housing development and ageing population.

Zone 3: A multimedia interactive table presenting the work of HKHS over the past seven decades is the highlight of this zone.  Visitors can play with it to search for the information and videos of different housing schemes, thereby have a deeper understanding of the mission of HKHS.  Before finishing the tour of the Exhibition Centre, visitors can leave their messages to the Housing Society at the “What do you think about HS?” Corner through an interactive screen.

The Exhibition Centre is located at Shop E, G/F, Prosperous Garden, 3 Public Square Street, Yau Ma Tei.  Centre information and online booking for guided tours are available at the website www.hkhs.com/hsec.  Starting from January 2019, the Exhibition Centre will also open to walk-in visitors (without guided tour service), opening hours being 11:30 am – 1:30 pm from Mondays to Thursdays, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm on Fridays, and 9:30 am – 1:30 pm on Saturdays.  For further enquires, please contact 2882-1717 / 2217-8383.
