Housing Society Honoured in HKICPA's Best Corporate Governance Awards 2020

The Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) received an accolade in the "Best Corporate Governance Awards 2020" organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants for the first time, and is the only organisation awarded the "Commendation on Progress in Corporate Governance and Sustainability" this year.

The Awards give recognition to listed companies and public sector/not-for-profit organisations that have demonstrated exemplary performance in corporate governance and sustainability; and encourage improvements in standards of disclosure and practices, with a view to raising the awareness of best practices in corporate governance and sustainability.

HKHS Chairman Walter Chan said, "We feel delighted and encouraged to have been recognised by the Awards.  The Housing Society has always embraced transparency in its governance with proactive communication to connect with stakeholders.  In this regard, we undertook a corporate governance review earlier this year with the goal to further enhance our governance practices, as we believe good corporate governance is the cornerstone of the sustainable development of HKHS.  We shall continue with our mission as the "housing laboratory", striving our best in developing quality housing and liveable environment for the people of Hong Kong."

HKHS' two-tier governance structure comprises a Supervisory Board and an Executive Committee.  While the Supervisory Board oversees the mission, vision, core values and guiding principles of HKHS, the Executive Committee lays out the strategies and policies to achieve the mission and objectives.  The Management is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the business strategies.  In recent years, HKHS has endeavoured to accomplish initiatives of sustainable development, particularly in environmental protection and community building.  The Housing Society has also been taking gradual steps to embrace GRI International Standards in the sustainability reporting so as to strengthen the stakeholder engagement and corporate information disclosure.

The Awards have been established since 2000, with the expert panels of judges and reviewers comprising representatives from the financial market regulators, the HKSAR Government and public sector authorities, academia, investors, professional associations, as well as prominent experts in the field of corporate governance.
