Kwun Tong Garden Estate Community Photo Competition
Preserving Precious Collective Memories

The Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) announced today the winners of the Kwun Tong Garden Estate (KTGE) Community Photo Competition (the Competition) "Time ∙ Place ∙ People" at its online award presentation ceremony.  The Competition received more than 340 entries for the "Story-telling photos" and the "Thematic photos" categories.  A champion, a first runner-up, a second runner-up and five merits were awarded for each category.  The award presentation ceremony was joined by HKHS Chief Executive Officer James Chan, HKHS Corporate Communications Director Pamela Leung, and the three organisation representatives from the jury panel, including Louis Chiang, General Secretary of Kwun Tong Methodist Social Service, William Leung, founder of Timeless Estates HK and Lam Hiu-man, founder of Hong Kong Reminiscence.

HKHS Chief Executive Officer James Chan said, "Built in the 1960s, Kwun Tong Garden Estate is currently one of the oldest rental estates of the Housing Society.  It is rich in collective memories and neighbourhood stories carried over 50 years.  We are thankful for the active participation of our residents, the community and our staff members, sending in many high-quality entries with unique angle of Kwun Tong Garden Estate captured by their cameras.  All the entries represent the participants' feeling and affection to the community."

James Chan continued, "While the Housing Society strives to build quality homes, we attach great importance to preserving history and collective memories when redeveloping our rental estates.  The Competition is a great opportunity for us to connect with residents and the community, enabling them to capture the precious moments of the estate before redevelopment.  The Housing Society will be launching a series of activities aimed at preserving the history and cultural heritage of the estate.  We will continue to engage our residents and stakeholders through different channels, and build a liveable and sustainable community together."

The champion of the Competition’s "Story-telling photos" category is a KTGE tenant with his piece "Basketball Court".  Its clean composition depicted the reflection of KTGE through a puddle on a sports ground.  As for the champion from the "Thematic photos" category, the winning piece "That’s How We All Grow Up" adopted KTGE as a background, leveraging sunbeams at dusk to highlight the silhouette of people in motion.

The planning for KTGE(II) redevelopment is underway.  To record and preserve the precious moments and people stories of the estate, HKHS organised the Kwun Tong Garden Estate Community Photo Competition in last November, encouraging residents and the wider community to tell the stories of KTGE through photos of different eras, showcasing its architecture and scenery, the people and their everyday living.
