Housing Society Bags Seven Accolades in Planning and Construction
Exemplifying Leadership in Building Green and Inclusive Communities
The Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) has recently clinched a total of seven awards and commendations at the “Green Building Award 2025” and the “Hong Kong Institute of Planners Awards 2024”, including the top honour in the former Award, Pioneer Award in the “Green Building Leadership Category” (Government, Institutions & NGOs), and the highest honour the Silver Award in the latter one, reaffirming its leading position in construction, planning and advancing sustainable development.
HKHS Chief Executive Officer James Chan said, “We feel profoundly privileged that the Housing Society’s construction and planning projects have once again earned the fame and recognitions in prestigious industry competitions. The award-winning projects embody the concept of sustainable development and adopt various innovative technologies, such as reusable collaboration centres built with Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) method at site and residential units featuring convertible and elderly-friendly designs. These significant achievements underscore our committed effort in building sustainable smart communities. The Housing Society will continue to champion the innovative spirit of the ‘housing laboratory’ and develop housing projects with forward-thinking approach, realising our vision of ‘Creating Homes for Sustainable Living’.”
At the recent “Hong Kong Institute of Planners Awards 2024”, HKHS clinched the Silver Award, the highest honour of the year, for its Dedicated Rehousing Estate Project at Ma Tau Kok, standing out among other excellent entries from Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. The project was recognised for creating a vibrant and inclusive community. Developed to meet rehousing needs arising from the Government’s development clearance exercises and urban renewal programme, the project offers approximately 1,100 rental and subsidised sale flats, among which more than 40% are accessible or convertible units, setting a new benchmark for public housing. The development also provides more than 10,000 square metres of public open space and diverse social welfare facilities, creating synergy with the neighbouring areas and creating a considerate, well-planned, vibrant and inclusive harbourfront community.
On another note, HKHS won the Pioneer Award, the highest honour in the “Green Building Leadership Category” (Government, Institutions & NGOs) at the “Green Building Award 2025”, co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC). The award recognises HKHS’s pioneering role in developing sustainable and inclusive communities. HKHS embeds environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into planning, development, and operations through its sustainability framework centred on three strategic pillars: “Sustainable Homes”, “Low-carbon Transformation”, and “Future-fit Capabilities”. Key initiatives include establishing Hong Kong’s first Smart-Space PropTech co-working space; applying Whole Life-Cycle Carbon Assessment across project planning, construction, and management; implementing Smart Site Safety System to improve efficiency; introducing MiC collaboration centres to revolutionise site culture and workers’ well-being; installing solar power systems in rental estates to support renewable energy generation; promoting elderly-friendly design in projects and residential units; as well as building people-centric and inclusive communities through connected support for housing estate tenants by HKHS’s multi-disciplinary team.
In addition, HKHS’s Dedicated Rehousing Estate at Ma Tau Kok and the Ming Wah Dai Ha Phase II Redevelopment projects won Merit Awards in the “New Buildings Category” (Projects Under Construction and/or Design – Residential) at the “Green Building Award 2025”. Two other projects, namely the elderly housing project “Chung Yuet Lau” at Jat Min Chuen in Shatin, and the MiC collaboration centre at the Dedicated Rehousing Estate at Kwu Tung North, were named Finalist in the same category as well. The latter also received the “Special Citation on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals”.
