Housing Society Drama Competition Advocates
Cross-generation Harmony

To encourage the younger generation to explore the topic of cross-generation harmony from different perspectives and to promote the spirit of caring for the elderly, the Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) organised a drama competition for secondary schools this academic year, and the finale was held at the Chiang Chen Studio Theatre of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on last Friday evening (15 March), which was attended by over 200 participants including teachers, students, parents and guests.

Themed “Generation Gap? No Way!”, the competition aims to inspire the contesting teams from secondary schools and NGOs to share their aspirations and views on inter-generational relationships through creative screenplay writing and captivating performance on the stage.  The judging panel, comprising representatives from HKHS, partnering organisations (Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, Hong Kong Education City Limited and Yahoo TV) and supporting organisations (The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, Senior Citizen Home Safety Association and Institute of Active Ageing of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) selected four finalists from a long list of entries to enter the finale, and the judging criteria included interpretation of theme, creativity, presentation of characters and interaction with the audience.

HKHS Chief Executive Officer Wong Kit-loong said, “In the face of the ageing population in Hong Kong, the Housing Society embarked on elderly housing projects and services in late 90’s, providing ‘ageing-in-place’ support for the sake of the elderly residents’ physical and mental health.  Through this drama competition with the theme of “Generation Gap? No Way!”, we hope to arouse the awareness of our new generation on the needs of the older people for building an inclusive society for all ages.  We are delighted to see the young people’s passion and enthusiasm throughout this activity.”

To strengthen the teams' understanding on drama performance and the lives of the elderly, HKHS collaborated with Hong Kong Repertory Theatre earlier this year to organise a workshop on screenplay writing and theatrical production, as well as a visit to the Housing Society Elderly Resources Centre, in which they could experience the daily routines of an elderly through simulations and interact with HKHS’s senior volunteers.  All shortlisted stories were authentic and very heart-warming, showing students’ love and care for the elderly.  The winning entries are as follows:
